For one of the classes I’m taking this semester, CS 404 Ethics and Computers In Society, we’re required to setup a blog and publish the occasional post. This means that next time you visit this blog, there might actually be some content that isn’t three months old. I know, I know, they said it wasn’t possible, but I might finally start blogging on a regular basis.

I can’t say that anything terribly exciting has happened over the course of the last few months. Unsurprisingly, I spent most of the Christmas break catching up on sleep and watching the BCS games. OU talked a lot of trash and then failed to perform against WV, once again proving that in-season performance is a poor indicator of any post-season bowl qualification.

With the commencement of the presidential primaries, it’s been interesting to watch the huge fluctuation of public opinion regarding the candidates, particularly Huckabee, whom I absolutely abhor. Anyone who thinks that he or she can singlehandedly demolish the current US tax structure is running a few quarts low. McCain’s success in New Hampshire may either be the result of his intense campaigning in that state or the more-liberal population’s backlash against the rhetoric of the more conservative / religious candidates for the GOP nomination. On the part of the Democrats, I was gladdened to see Obama take Iowa, even if it didn’t translate to a victory in New Hampshire. The last thing I want to see come November elections is Clinton as the Democratic candidate and Huckabee as the Republican candidate. Were that to occur, I’d seriously consider looking for employment outside of the States.

School-wise, everything is going pretty smoothly. I decided to withdraw from my CS 345 class because the due dates for the projects conflicted with three other classes, and I’d rather work on getting my GPA up than suffer through 14 credit hours just to keep the $375 that the University decided to give me.

My decision to drop CS 345 was also somewhat influenced by my new Church calling – they tagged me for Asst. Ward Clerk. I should have expected as much when I wrote that I was a CS major on the information sheet they had the new members fill out. Aside from entering donations into the system after Church on Sundays, I’m also in charge of maintaining the ward’s internet presence, which at the moment is quite minimal. And until someone grants me the proper access, that’s probably the way it’s going to stay.

Despite OU’s loss to Colorado on Saturday (let’s be honest – they deserved to lose playing as sloppy as they did), I’m looking forward to the OU-Texas game this Saturday. The afternoon session of conference will just have to sit it out.

I left work early on Friday to make a trip up to IKEA in Draper – I figured the store couldn’t be too crowded on a Friday afternoon/evening. Fortunately, I was correct in my assumption. The parking lot was nowhere close to full, and I was able to walk around the showrooms without having to don riot gear. While the catalog is always more efficient, I was able to find shelves for my bedroom, a small chest of drawers for my desk, a roman blind, and a medicine cabinet for the ground floor bathroom. Needless to say, the remainder of Friday and most of Saturday was spent assembling those items.

Saturday’s football games were pretty amazing, with OU smearing Utah State, Tulsa beating BYU, and Utah kicking the crap out of UCLA. The whole Utah/UCLA thing makes BYU’s team look pretty pathetic, but hopefully, we’ll have better luck at our homecoming game on Saturday.

I’m not sure if it was because I stayed up until 4:00am on Saturday assembling shelves or just fate, but I managed to develop a nasty head cold by noon that same day. By evening, I was so out of it, between the cold medicine and the cold itself, that I really couldn’t do much more than just vegetate, so I ended up just watching a movie.

Ward prayer last night was somewhat of a disappointment – once again, no food! Seriously, do they think we go there just to stand around in the dark? Refreshments, people, refreshments.

Today happens to be my 23rd birthday. If all goes as planned, I’ll most likely celebrate it by doing homework. Yea! Honestly, though, I went up to Orem last night where I had a fantastic birthday dinner with my cousins, one of whom also has his birthday this week.

I was at the BYU game on Saturday and didn’t get to watch OU slaughter North Texas, but I think the 79-10 final score speaks for itself. As for the BYU game, it emphasized the defense’s strength but also highlighted some major faults – principally some extremely sloppy passing. It’ll certainly be nice to have a few night games this season – it’s a shame that BYU didn’t invest in a cover for the stadium rather than a new visitors’ center – too late for that now.

Yet another of my friends has gotten engaged, so congrats to him.
