Last month, I had the opportunity to visit Jakarta on business. I didn’t have any plans for Songkran (Thai New Year/Water Festival), so rather than just sitting around my apartment and wasting two vacation days, I asked my boss if it would be okay to work those days instead. His solution was a trip to our company’s office in Indonesia, and I didn’t object.

During my week-long trip, there were two aspects of Jakarta that really stuck out: the foliage and the food.

The hotel I stayed at was located on the corner of clover highway interchange and was in a complex with a couple of residential condos. Even though it was in the middle of the city, there were tons of big trees, something I rarely see in central Bangkok, as most of the large trees have been cut down to make space for new construction.

Eating in Jakarta was an adventure in and of itself. As you might expect in a country made up of 18,000 islands, Indonesians eat a lot of seafood, most of which is not served in a form easily recognizable by a Westerner.

The seafood alternative to a bone-in steak.

Soups weren’t any safer. This one was some type of curdled miso-style dish with all sorts of things thrown in which I couldn’t even identify.

The street food didn’t have much going for it in terms of aesthetics, either, but the taste of deep-fried meat is fairly universal regardless of where you’re at (and when it’s this fried, any type of meat will taste the same, for better or worse.) The stall I purchased this from claimed that it was duck. Between the chili paste and the “breading” that enveloped it, your guess is as good as mine.

There weren’t any restaurants within walking distance from my hotel (one downside of putting a hotel in the middle of an urban forest), so each night I took a taxi to the nearest shopping mall to get dinner. Given that the mall was connected to the Ritz and ground floor housed Hermès, LV, and Tiffany, there were bound to be some decent places to eat. After all, who wouldn’t want to have a nice meal out on the boat?

Stacked crepes with blueberry sauce. So much better than fish-parts soup.

Best of all, though, in Indonesia, even Wendy’s counts as upscale dining. Hurray for all-beef patties and chocolate Frosties.

After reading The Hunger Games, I felt the need to read something that more closely aligned itself within the category of literature. (Yes, The Hunger Games was an entertaining read, but it won’t be winning a Newbery or Pulitzer.) Before coming to Bangkok, I made a rather long list of books that I wanted to read on the flight over, and, thanks to a wonderfully large, beautiful dose of Dramamine, I barely did any in-flight reading. FYI, for those who haven’t made that leg, the best way to cross the Pacific is asleep. In the last few months, I’ve slowly been working my way through that original list.

The Sense of an Ending is by no means a lengthy book, barely managing to straddle the novel/novella line, but what it lacks in quantity of content it makes up for in quality and substance. Julian Barnes does a wonderful job helping the reader understand the protagonist’s misgivings towards certain critical choices in his past as his curiosity compels him to reevaluate the events surrounding them. While the novel isn’t completely linear, it does not rely so heavily on flashbacks that the plot becomes incoherently garbled or diluted by context. I can’t write much more without spoiling the novel, but I will say that this novel will definitely make you reexamine the decisions you’ve made in your own life from a more cautious perspective.

The Sense of an Ending on Amazon (Kindle, Paperback, Hardcover, Audio CD)

One of the cool things about Bangkok is the sheer number of Buddhist temples throughout the city. As little infrastructure existed when many of the older temples were constructed, they were built along the rivers and canals, which were reliable during both the dry and wet seasons, and the city’s early layout reflects that. From the upper levels of Wat Arun, you can see a Wat Pho and the Grand Palace in the distance.

Each of the spires are topped with dozens of golden bells, which made an absolutely amazing sound in the light breeze.

The apartment I’m leasing is a two-bedroom corner unit on the 27th floor of the building, which means:

I now have an empty spare bedroom. Come visit. Seriously. It’s warm here.

I no longer have to fight off swarms of mosquitoes at night.

I get to enjoy an incredible view of the city – this is from my bedroom:

So, while I’m waiting for the technicians from the ISP to show up, you just go head on over to Kayak and start comparing fares …

It’s a lot less intriguing once you actually have to go through the process yourself. Mainly because it involves combing through apartment listings in Thai, which will give you a headache faster than anything.

Fortunately, my bilingual coworkers offered their assistance, and, after 7 weeks in Thailand, I finally have my own apartment. I’ve been fortunate to have very gracious hosts for these last two months, but it will be nice to have a place of my own where I can keep my own schedule. The building is right off of the downtown subway line and just two stops away from the office, which will make my morning and evening commutes considerably shorter. I’ll be moving in over the weekend, so I’ll try to post some pics ASAP.

Like many developing countries, Thailand exhibits a large economic separation between its upper and lower classes but little physical separation, with multimillion-dollar high-rises sprouting up right next to slums. It’s somewhat depressing to see these giant towers and malls go up so quickly when so much of the population will only see them from the exterior. Developer countries certainly have class problems of their own, so don’t think that we are blameless either.

Compare the street market near the office building where I work to the shopping mall downtown. They both sell Hermes and Prada, just at very different price levels.

Or, The One Where I Got to Do Something Tourist-y for Work

As an analyst, most of what I do for work will never be posted to my blog. Once in a while, though, I get to do something outside of my standard job duties that is worthy of mention here, and today happened to be one of those days.

We had some associates in town from Taiwan, so we took them to see one of our distributor-operated facilities, which happened to also be a short distance from the Grand Palace. To give you an idea of what traffic is like here, even when it isn’t rush hour, it took us an hour to drive the 10 miles from the downtown office to the facility.

After touring the facility, we went to the Grand Palace, where I got to act as a chaperon/marker (i.e. Follow/Look for the tall white guy.) I managed to snap a few shots with my phone — I’ll go back later with a real camera, but these are still more interesting than spreadsheets, right?

Also, next time I go, I will not be wearing a tie. A little too warm for that. Nor will I wear dress shoes. Next time.
