I was asked yesterday evening how a recent blind date had gone, on a scale from 1 to 10. Realizing that I hadn’t ever bothered to develop a personal scale for blind dates, I now present an initial draft:
10. Sparks fly, love at first sight, etc.
9. The pairing is near perfect and the date goes into extra innings, possibly ditching any others in a group.
8. The pairing is great and the date is a complete success.
7. The pairing is good and the date goes well overall.
6. The pairing is good, but the date itself isn’t anything spectacular.
5. The pairing is poorly matched (or she may be shy/nervous), but not to the extent that it is overly awkward or uncomfortable.
4. The pairing is poorly matched, to the extent that the date is awkward and or uncomfortable, but not unbearably so.
3. Both parties mutually agree to end the date early (or one of the parties wish they would.)
2. Someone gets ditched, mid-date.
1. Catastrophe, in any form.
Usually, a 6 or above merits a second date (or at least an attempt at one), 5 may or may not merit a second date, while 4 or below may imply the the person who arranged the blind date seriously hates me or seriously hates the girl with whom he/she/they set me up.
Most of the blind dates I’ve been on have fallen in the 5-6 range, with just a single venture into the 3 zone last autumn.
Yeah! Fun new game! I want to try! Let me know next time you’re in California.
Excellent scale. This make the whole “blind date” opportunity quite a game. I can’t wait to see how the next one(s) rate.
The thought of my social life being viewed as a game is slightly worrisome …
