I woke up at 3:14 this morning to a high-pitched ringing. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the most alert person when I wake up in the morning, and it took me a few minutes to identify the source of the noise. Fire alarm? No. Laptop battery alarm? Nope, not that, either. Come to find out, the UPS for my workstation was throwing an overload error, which was bizarre since I make sure to keep it at a 50-60% load. After trying to diagnose the problem unsuccessfully for a couple of hours, I finally just gave up, yanked the cord on it, and cycled the power on it a few times to get it to stop making the awful screeching and went back to bed.
When I woke up (at a more reasonable hour), I called APC and was instructed to just let it sit for 8-16 hours and then it should reset itself. Just as long as it doesn’t go off again at such an ungodly hour.
